Themed "Peace & Dignity are Human Rights," FoLA's 23rd Annual Commemoration of the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights will take place as an online event on December 4th, 2020, 7-9pm. This year, our time-honored commemoration will feature keynote speaker Daniel Kovalik, human rights professor, author, and activist, and the music of WAYTA and RUMISONKO.
The Baltimore Sun published on November 11th, 2020 a letter by Laurie Liskin, a leading member of our Howard County Coalition for Immigrant Justice, urging county executive Calvin Ball to rescind his veto of County Bill 51-2020, which would have ended Howard County's contract with ICE to detain immigrants at the Jessup Detention Center: "It is time for Howard County to stop making $2 million per year from the ICE contract and stop this appalling treatment of human beings."
Last Wednesday's webinar "Power to the People! Policing & Caribbean Autonomy in Nicaragua" was a resounding success. The English version of the video is now available on YouTube. The Spanish version should become available shortly.
In response to Calvin Ball's veto of CB-51, the Coalition vows to continue fighting for immigrant justice and vehemently condemns Ball's repeated mischaracterization of the detainees as violent criminals, which has furthered the stereotype that Brown and Black people are dangerous. "If County Executive Ball truly cared about making Howard County an inclusive community that dismantles systemic racism, he would choose not to profit off of the incarceration of Brown and Black people."
